Academic Test

This test is usually for people who are wanting to study in an english-speaking environment, or for professional registration (e.g. Nurse, Doctor, Teacher or Veterinarian).

The Academic IELTS test consists of 4 areas: Academic reading, Academic writing, speaking and listening.

How I can help

After our initial consultation I will put together an Individual learning plan which will help you focus on areas of need. I will teach you about the areas you will be marked on and what you need to do to ensure you’re including these elements. I can also help you with exam techniques and help you understand what the examiners are looking for.

Reading: 

You will be required to read academic texts written in different styles which will use technical vocabulary and complete the test in 60 minutes. The test will have three sections with a total of 40 questions. The test will include questions such as matching headings; True, false, not given; yes, no, not given; multiple choice, matching features and more.

Writing: 

This test comes in two parts, Task 1 and Task 2. For the first task, you must describe a graph of some kind: bar chart, line graph, map, pie chart and more. You are required to write 150 words. it’s recommended that you complete task 1 in 20 minutes. Task 2 is a formal essay of 250 words. You will respond to a question and will be marked on your task response, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammar. It is recommended that you complete this task in 40 minutes.

Listening: 

The listening test is the same for both academic and general candidates. You will be given 30 minutes to complete this test and have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. It is a four-part test with 40 questions which include listening to monologues and dialogues.

Speaking: 

The speaking test is also the same for both general and academic candidates and comes in 3 parts. This includes general questions about yourself, and a cue card question, where you have one minute to prepare your answer and approximately two minutes to speak. The third part of the speaking test is responding to more abstract questions. The test will take around 15 minutes to complete.

General Test

This test is usually for people who are looking to migrate to an English-speaking country, (e.g. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and UK) or if you wish to train or study at below degree level.

The General IELTS test consists of 4 areas: Academic reading, Academic writing, speaking and listening.

Reading: 

You will be required to read texts of a more general nature which will last 60 minutes with a total of 40 questions. It will include tasks such as completing sentences, giving short answers to open questions, multiple choice questions and more. 

Writing:

This test comes in two parts. For the first part, you will have to write a letter. This could be a formal, semi-formal or informal letter. For task 2 you will have to respond to a question. This could be based on 7 different types of questions, such as agree/disagree, discuss both views, or advantages and disadvantages. For both tasks, you will be marked on your ability to respond to the question appropriately, how you organise your ideas and your use of vocabulary and grammar.
